I have found with typed or computer generated text, scanning and OCR works well. It makes the document changable. If you do not want to make changes to the document, but wish to preserve it as-is, just scan and jpeg image is fine also. An important thing to remember, if it is a old document you are trying to preserve, digitizing without constant maintenance on the hardware and software, and upgrading at scheduled intervals is the only way to insure the image won't be lost. Microfilm all manuscript and old documents. As I was told recently, "you can always hold it up to a light, you can't do that with a CD."
