LOCATION: Garnet Ghost Town, Montana
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Garnet Preservation Association is a private, non-profit organization that works cooperatively with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to preserve and maintain the ghost town of Garnet. Garnet Ghost Town is located in the Garnet Mountains of western Montana. Currently, the Garnet Preservation Association hires individuals in the summer months to help manage visitor use and maintain Garnet. This position is responsible for visitor contact and historic interpretation at Garnet Ghost Town.
In 1895, Dr. Armistead Mitchell erected a stamp mill to crush local ore and a town formed around the mill. This town was originally called Mitchell, but in 1897 became known as Garnet. In 1898, the town was booming with 1000 people, over 31 businesses, and numerous residences. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Lead Visitor Center Contact is responsible for day-to-day visitor contact within Garnet Ghost Town and the Garnet Management Area as defined in the 1998 Garnet Management Plan. These duties include answering visitor questions, leading group tours and staffing the visitor center. This person is also responsible for managing the Visitor Center in Garnet which includes opening and closing the Visitor Center, retail sales, accounting for sales and cash daily, maintaining visitor center sales inventory, and ordering inventory items as needed in a timely fashion.
Another important component of this position is the preparation of a spring and fall newsletter. This newsletter is distributed to the members of the GPA and the general public. It is also posted on the Garnet web page.
This position is also required to participate in light maintenance in Garnet, which includes but is not limited to: cleaning the toilet facilities and other buildings in the Garnet Management Area and light grounds maintenance. Other duties include: assisting in training other seasonal and volunteer personnel, taking weather readings and calling this information into the BLM office via radio, assisting with organization of the annual Garnet Day Celebration, assisting in staffing the fee booth, taking and recording daily water system samples and other duties as assigned.
The successful applicant will spend approximately 90% of his or her time dealing with the public and the remaining 10% on the maintenance of recreation facilities and historic structures.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have good interpersonal skills and enjoy conversing with visitors. In addition, the applicant should be able to write well, conduct tours and perform light maintenance duties and should be focused, motivated, and able to work well in both a team setting and independently. Recreation related experience and/or background course work in Recreation Management, History, Cultural Resource Management or Public Relations is desired, but not necessary.
The applicant must maintain a current CPR/first aid card. If the person does not have a current card, training will be provided.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: The majority of the work will be done at Garnet Ghost Town. Garnet is located approximately 45 miles east of Missoula, Montana. Access to Garnet is via 11 miles of gravel road. Travel to and from Garnet is the responsibility of the applicant. Pay will be provided at a rate of $9.50 an hour with potential raises depending on performance.
WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week 5 days a week. Position is required to work weekends and holidays. Starting and ending dates can be negotiated to fit the individual's schedule.
