CURATORIAL PROJECT ASSISTANT
Japanese Art Department
Temporary Full Time Position
July 2002 ? January 2003

The Asian Art Museum is seeking a motivated and resourceful individual to
assist in researching and writing labels and Japan-related educational
materials for the opening of the New Asian in January 2003.  This is
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a skilled individual to actively support
a dynamic curatorial department during an exciting period in the museum's
history!

The Asian Art Museum holds in trust one of the finest collections of Asian
art in the world.  With its state-of-the-art galleries, the New Asian will
be one of the cultural crown jewels of the Bay Area, and a powerful magnet
for art lovers from around the world.   The New Asian will showcase the
museum's magnificent Japanese collections including rare painted scrolls
and screens, ceramics from the 3rd millennium BCE to the present, major
Buddhist sculpture, and superb decorative arts and textiles.   Netsuke from
the museum's extensive collection, not displayed for almost a decade, will
once again go on view.  An authentic functioning Japanese tea house,
hand-crafted by traditional artisans, will be included in the Japanese
galleries.

The primary responsibilities of the Curatorial Project Assistant will be
to:

z     Research and draft labels and other didactics for a Japanese basket
display
z     Convert netsuke lists into new label format
z     Research label information for Japanese ceramics in the Pan-Asian
ceramics display
z     Research label information for Japanese works in "Arts of the Book"
thematic display
z     Assist with compiling and/or writing Japan-related materials for the
Education Department
z     Research and draft labels in the "samurai" area
z     Research and draft labels for New Asian contemporary ceramics

Minimum Qualifications

·     M.A. in Asian Art History, with specialization in Japanese Art
·     One year of related work experience preferably in a museum or other
educational/research organization; or an equivalent combination of
education, training, and experience
·     Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and procedures involved in the
interpretation of Japanese art
·     Solid research skills: must be able to interpret the collections and
to communicate knowledge relevant to the collection
·     Superb writing skills; ability to write effectively for both general
and scholarly audiences
·     Good computer skills; knowledge of Microsoft Office and Japanese
language software
·     Ability to read original research; proficient in speaking, reading,
and writing Japanese
·     Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good
judgment; extremely reliable and dependable
·     Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working
relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, and representatives of
other institutions
·     Detail-oriented, meticulous, and conscientious in following through
on assigned tasks
