I'm afraid that I haven't followed the responses to
the topographic map inquiry as closely as I might
have done, but I don't remember anyone mentioning
what I think may be the most convenient sources for
topos.  Our university library maintains a collection
of topographic maps, many of which circulate, and I
believe that other university libraries and even some
public libraries have similar collections.
        In our area, many sporting goods stores sell
topographic maps.  I don't suppose that their coverage
is exhaustive, and it wouldn't surprise me if they
skipped the urban sheets, but it's worth a try.
