Bonni-Dara,
There is no one magic number for the resolution of images. You should be
choosing a resolution based on the size and in some cases the detail included
in the original. The long-term needs of the institution and your audience
need to be balanced against cost, staff time, etc.
There is no "standard" but generally projects are scanning photographs between
3000-7000 pixels across the long dimension for master images. Other materials
(text, maps, oversize, etc.) have their own target resolution.)
We are currently revising our Best Practice guidelines for the creation of
digital images - I'll post an announcement when they are complete.
In the mean time visit the CDP's site for our current guidelines and links to
several other projects guidelines.
