I must say that I, as a museum visitor, do not care for the number labels.
All too often they seems confusing.  That said, not long ago I went to a
temporary exhibit at the Oregon History Center that used the number
labels very effectively.  I reason...they has small images of the objects
next to the number/descriptions.  That way, even if you can't tell which
number goes with which item (I've noticed that often the number labels get
used in cases that have a large number of smaller objects rather close
together, making it hard to tell which number goes with what), it's still
easy to find on the one page label.
