Hi, all.
When I was applying to graduate school for a PhD iin art history about ten years ago (and I'm thinking this hasn't changed much since then), German was required, as was another language at least, probably the language of the field you would be studying. That is, if you were planning to study 19th century French art, you would study German and French, and if you were planning to study Italian Renaissance art, you would study German and Italian (again, at least). Usually you need just a translation proficiency, not a speaking and writing fluency, but language *is* necessary, because so much has been written in other languages and you may need to do research with primary source materials in other languages.
Just some thoughts, Meryl Zwanger
