Depending on what one is protecting, and what kinds of crowds one expects,
it also might be appropriate to avoid stanchions altogether, and to use
other (perhaps less alienating) means, such as low broad borders of pebbles,
or bronze "Bot's dots" (as in use in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan), for
example.
