school in America is split up into years -- generally, Kindergarden (c. 5
years old) through 6th grade are elementary school, 7th and 8th grade (the
pre-teen years -- 11-13) are Middle School, and in high school, the four
years are split into, in order, freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. In
Middle School and beyond, the school day is split up into equal "periods" of
class -- 1-8, for example, so you have english first period, history second
period, physical education third period, etc etc etc. each period is usually
around 45 minutes long, with a few minutes in between to get to the next
class. this is all general, of course -- the states are in control of their
own educational system.
hope that helps!
beth
