Dear All,
The Cappella degli Scrovegni, previously closed for renovations, will be
reopened officially by the Italian president, On. Ciampi, on the 18th of
March. According to the well-written article by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle in
the _Corriere della Sera_ (12 feb 2002, p. 33), the restorations have
revealed how Giotto worked. In actuality, there are no real surprises, as
the technique -- as discussed by Quintavalle -- is a "textbook" version of
Trecento Italian fresco technique, as described by Mora, Mora, and
Philippot, _Conservation of Wall Paintings_, trans. Elisabeth Schwarzbaum
and Harold Plenderleith, London: Butterworths, 1983.
For those who read Italian, Corriere della Sera has a web page:
http://www.corriere.it
For those wishing more information about opening hours and reservations:
both the following web sites lead to the same pages,
http://www.comune.padova.it (a fairly reliable model for the web sites for
Italian cities) and http://www.padovanet.it
-On the left, under "Vivere Padova," chose "Musei Civici"
-On this screen, you may chose English by clicking on the English flag, or
may continue in Italian, as follows
-On the right, click on "musei"
-At the bottom of the page, click on "Cappella degli Scrovegni"
-At the bottom of the page, click on "Informazione"
Hope this is of help and interest, best regards,
Star Meyer
