Dear Jay,
I don't have the exact numbers, but I have been told (and noticed from
personal experience) that, particularly in small arts and historical
museums, a disproportionate number of employees are female. I've not
located any study explaining why, though arts organizations generally boast
a higher number of female employees than other corporate environments.
In response to the "blame game" issue, I would note that, although there is
a disproportionate representation, that does not necessarily imply that
these positions are not available for white (non-Hispanic) men, that there
is not an equal employment opportunity. Women of color continue to
represent a disproportionate number of domestic workers, but I don't think
this is because white men are locked out of this lucrative and fulfilling
industry. Get me? :-)
