I know that you said reply off-list but I think this a good topic to keep on
the list.
Being an educator myself, I usually gauge salaries by what the local teachers
make with comparable experience and education. Unfortunately, teachers are
usually grossly underpaid but museum educators are often paid below those pay
scales. At least if you salaries are comparable, you won't have your educators
thinking "geez, I could go back into classroom teaching and make more money."
:)
Then again, I also believe that with the same experience and education,
everyone should be on the same pay scale regardless of position. I see no
reason for curators or registrars or other museum personnel with the same level
of education and experience to get paid any more or less than educators.
Now the obvious solution in your case since you have someone who is already in
as a part-timer, is to take their hourly rate and apply it to a 2000 hour work
year. Throw in a couple of thousand more for overtime unless your museum NEVER
does any weekend or evening programs outside of a 40 hour work week (highly
unlikely) and you have a salary. Again, I'd strongly suggest that you pay your
educator the same as you would any other position requiring the same education
level and experience.
