has anyone been following the first presidential mansion saga that's been going on in Philly?
for those of you who haven't, a QUICK rundown (please feel free to correct me on the details!): while digging to build the new Independence Mall/ visitors center, etc, on the site of the Washington's presidential mansion, lent to him by .... (Morris?)....workers found a. an icehouse, b. the privy of Alexander Hamilton's assistant. from what i have read, the city basically said, "well, archaeologists are used to dealing in 100s of years, they can wait til this building is torn down," and "its not like we're destroying it, we're just covering it with concrete." although i believe i read somewhere that they are going to try to incorporate the icehouse into the design of the museum/visitors' center.
now, if i have missed something, please let me know, but it seems as though this was the last time it was mentioned, and that no one seems to mind one bit. is there anyone out there who knows more about this situation and/or people who are trying to postpone the construction to excavate?
thanks
beth
