Museum Institutes at Sagamore
A limited number of spaces are available for participants from outside New
York State working in small and mid-sized organizations for the 2002 Museum
Institute at Sagamore, sponsored by the Upstate History Alliance.
UHA holds a yearly training institute at Great Camp Sagamore in the
Adirondack Mountains (www.sagamore.org) Nationally known speakers in the
museum field meet with a small group of museum professionals for some
intense instruction and group discussions. In 2000, 21 educators gathered to
work with speakers that included George Hein and Lynn Dierking. In 2001, our
institute focused on Leadership with 18 participants, ranging from directors
to educators, learning valuable tools and skills for bringing effective
leadership to their organizations.
In 2002, our fifth year, the Museum Institute at Sagamore will focus on:
Vision, Mission, Market. speakers include Dorothy Chen Courtin, Marianne
Bez and Beverly Bridger.
In these changing times, it's critical for our organizations to have a clear
sense of identity and purpose and the skills to convey that purpose to a
wide variety of audiences. At the institute, September 30th-October 3rd,
you'll work hard--but you'll return to your organization with new ideas and
new connections. Museum professionals and others will address topics such
as:
Developing your organization's vision and mission
Identity assessment
Surveys and evaluation
Developing a marketing plan
Guerrilla marketing
Developing Community Partners
Front Line Training for Staff and Volunteers
The Museum Institutes at Sagamore provide a unique learning experience. It's
in a beautiful and historic setting, with informal access to speakers unlike
any other training opportunity. Former participants attest:
"I found it very insightful and a wonderful learning opportunity. The
speakers were fantastic."
"I thought this whole conference was invigorating and enlightening!"
The cost of the institute, including lodging, meals and all materials is
$350 for out-of-state partipants. The application form and more information
about the institute and UHA is available at our website,
