I recommend investigating the Museum of Web Art http://www.mowa.org ..
While it is a purely virtual museum, it's designers adopted some very
"real" elements .. including simple but compelling use of virtual
docents/guides. It's one of my all-time favorite's, and has been online for
a number of years now.
