I often rename large groups of files using a .bat file, and long files names
are supported in Win2000's "version" of DOS. I use Excel to create the
sequence of commands (DOS rename in this case), in particular the
"concatenate" function. Concatenate allows differing cells within Excel to
be combined into a string. Copy and "paste-special > values" back into an
empty area of the excel spreadsheet. Copy the values from excel and paste
to a text editor, notepad for example. Save the notepad window as
"something.bat" in the directory of a duplicate set of images. From DOS,
run the "something.bat" file to rename the images.
This should do the trick...it worked on a dummy set of data created to
simulate your situation. Duplicate your images to a temporary directory and
run the bat file on the dupes...just to be safe.
