Although I do not have any general-store based activities to recommend to
you, I do have a suggestion. Period specific costumes, even simple ones, are
very useful in helping children to more fully participate in interactive,
role-playing activites.  You did not mention whether or not costumes were
used - by your staff or the children- but they could make a great addition
to your program.

Dear museum professionals,

One of our school programs, Pioneer Living, serves all the 3rd graders in
the county some time during their school year. They spend a day with us
churning butter, learning about life in a log cabin, and attending a
one-room schoolhouse.

This year we are thinking about adding a visit to our general store. In
keeping with the rest of the program, we are hoping to come up with some
wonderful interactive activities to allow school children to experience
shopping/selling in the 19th century (including weighing & measuring,
bartering, recording a sale, wrapping a package, etc.).

Does anyone have general store-based activities that have been successful
and would be suitable for 3rd graders?
