It sounds like the wood roach.  They are usually found outside around
trees.  The only way to get rid of them and prevent their return is to
replace your wooden cages with metal or plastic ones.

Yes, water stimulates reproduction in roaches.  If you remove water from a
roache's diet for 3 days they become sterile, after 5 days they die.
