The Drawing Center Invites Applicants for Its Paid Internship Program

The Drawing Center is the only not-for-profit institution in the country
to focus on the exhibition of drawings, both contemporary and
historical.  It was established in 1977 to provide opportunities for
emerging and under-recognized artists;  to demonstrate the significance
and diversity of drawings throughout history;  and to stimulate public
dialogue on issues of art and culture.  The Drawing Center is located in
the historic SoHo district of New York City, known for its large number
of art galleries, museums, and artists' studios.

The Drawing Center's Internship Program provides opportunities to
acquire practical experience in the daily functions of a small art
museum and exhibition space by rotating interns through each department
and utilizing their assistance in exhibition installations and
de-installations.  Areas of the museum include education, historical
curation, contemporary curation, registration, development,
publications, press and public relations, operations, reception, and The
Drawing Center's Viewing Program for emerging artists.  While in each
area, interns learn the responsibilities of each department by working
with staff members on projects that vary according to the special and
ongoing needs of each area as well as gain an overall sense of the
holistic and integrated structure of a small museum.

To complement these practical experiences, interns work on reflective
activities that deepen their thinking and develop larger questions about
what they are learning and figuring out as well as participate in
professional development exercises that provide assistance and resources
for the possibility of future employment and professional status in the
visual arts.

Applicants to the Internship Program should be undergraduates, graduate
students, or recent graduates.  Interns may receive work-study payment
or academic credit, or they may volunteer their time;  a small stipend
may be available for our summer program.  They must be able to work at
least 15 hours each week during the duration of the internship.
Internships run for approximately three months;  our summer program runs
from May to July, our fall program runs from September to December, and
our winter/spring program runs from January to April.  In some
circumstances, interns may be able to continue for subsequent sessions.
