Fort Osage National Historic Landmark
Missouri Town 1855
Jackson County Parks Intern 2002
The Historic Sites Division of Jackson County Parks & Recreation is seeking a summer intern for work at either or both Fort Osage and Missouri Town 1855 in the Kansas City area. This internship is for students pursuing degrees in museum studies, history, or anthropology and have a strong interest in careers in history museums, living history villages, or archaeology.
Fort Osage National Historic Landmark (NHL) is a reconstructed living history park and museum located in the small village of Sibley, Missouri. Fort Osage was the first outpost established by the United States in the Louisiana Territory and was initially surveyed during the historic voyage of Lewis and Clark (1804-1806). General William Clark returned to the area shortly after the expedition and founded Fort Osage in 1808. The fort served as a military post and government trading house, primarily for fur trade with the Osage and neighboring native groups. Reconstruction of the fort was based, in part, on the results of archaeological excavations in 1941-1942. The reconstructed fort structures are intended to represent the fort as it was in 1812. Other features at the park consist of a renovated early-twentieth century school building that houses a museum and gift shop, an historic cemetery that is associated with the fort and the historic village of Sibley, and Native American archaeological sites that date from the last 2,000 years. A considerable archaeological collection from past excavations on the fort site and adjacent Native American sites are housed in the visitor's center.
Missouri Town 1855 is a recreated living history village whose purpose is to interpret life in a small antebellum farming community in western Missouri in 1855. The 25 historical structures, which have been moved to the site, date from the early- and middle-nineteenth century. The structures were all derived from within a 75-mile radius of the park. The historical village is located in Fleming Park in Blue Springs, Missouri near Lake Jacomo. A wide variety of residences ranging from small log cabins to two-story frame houses are scattered throughout the park. Other structures include livestock stables and barns, a church, a school, a mercantile, a law office, a tavern/inn, and various outbuildings.
The intern's responsibilities will be structured to the successful applicant's curriculum or major. It is preferred that the intern have prior experience and/or a strong interest either in cataloging archaeological and historical collections or in exhibit design and construction. Experience with PastPerfect Museum Software would be a definite plus.
The intern will be expected to work on one or more of the following projects.
· Analysis, conservation, and cataloging of the Fort Osage NHL archaeological collection
· Cataloging and conservation of Missouri Town 1855 decorative arts and historical objects
· Modifying existing and/or creating new exhibits in the Fort Osage visitor's center or Missouri Town 1855 historic structures
· Labeling, conserving, and storing of Fort Osage and Missouri Town non-interpretive collections
The Intern will work directly with the Museum Curator.
The starting and ending dates for the internship are flexible, but it is expected that the intern would work through the Summer of 2002. A minimum commitment of 8 weeks is required, and the internship will last for a maximum of 12 weeks.
Pay is $8.00/hr at 40 hours per week.
