Over the past 30 years of working in several museums, I have picked up a few bits of advice
1.) Be willing to travel anywhere and begin your career working in a small museum with limited resources. You will have a learning experience that they can't teach in academe and will last you a lifetime.
2.) Realise that having the "right" attitude on the job will reap more dividends than you can imagine.
3.) Don't take yourself too seriously. Maintain a sense of humor.....have fun......and as the Cub Scouts say, "Do Your Best!"
Thanks for asking,
Wesley Creel
Administrator of Programs and Interim Director of Museums

P.S. I also learned that the older I get the less answers I have.......keep in mind that when I was in my 20s I had an answer for everything. Now, I spend more of my time asking questions.......you'll be suprised how difficult it is to ask the "right" question......it sometimes takes over 3 decades of experience!

This is a two-parter:
FOR THE TENURED, MORE SENIOR MUSEUMS FOLK:
What are three things you believe that young people
should know and be prepared to handle in museums work?
Conversely,
FOR THE NOT YET THERES OR JUST ARRIVEDS:
If any of these people here were willing to mentor
you, what are three things you would truly like to
learn from them?
In both instances, please be specific.
