If you have not seen this yet, the National Trust for Historic Preservation
has the Water Works on their website since designating it one of the "11 Most
Endangered National Historic Sites."  Here is the link:

Thank you to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for bringing
national attention to the endangered status of this important New Jersey and
National historic site.   Thank you also to the State and National Coalition
to Save the Water Works (consisting of:  Advocates for New Jersey History,
American Institute of Architects, NJ Chapter, National Trust for Historic
Preservation, New Jersey Historical Society, Preservation New Jersey, Save
America's Treasures, Society for Industrial Archeology, and US/ICOMOS) for
strong, committed and continuing effort to ensure the preservation of this
American Treasure.

 The historic Hackensack Water Company site is the oldest intact rapid sand
filtration  and pumping station in the nation and places New Jersey in the
forefront of the development of technology for providing pure water to the
citizens  of this country.  WWC's proposal includes 10-acre restored
environmental park, a history and technology museum, Environmental Education
Center, Hackensack River Research Center and a cultural wing with programming
for all ages.

WWC, the State and National Coalition to Save the Water Works and the
citizens of New Jersey and the nation await the decision of DEP Commissioner
Bradley Campbell on the Bergen County request to demolish the historic
Hackensack Water Co. and create a "Roman style Ruin," a new concrete
amphitheater, a landfill knoll and an office building in the remains of the
historic site.

The site is listed on the New Jersey and the National Registers of Historic
Places, is an "Official Project" of Save America's Treasures, and is being
actively investigated by the National Landmark Survey for possible
designation as a National Landmark.
