Users of Yahoo should not be surprised by this development and it is most
probably a portent of things to come with so-called 'free' email services.
The facts suggest that generic advertising on sites such as these is
trending downwards.
This is partly as a result of advertisers realising that that the Net is
PART of the promotional mix rather than advertising nirvana. Secondly there
is very real resistance from users to the annoying popups that Yahoo is all
to ready to promote on advertisers behalf . Advertisers themselves are now
aware that such advertising builds consumer resistance rather than selling
products and services.
I would strongly recommend other services over Yahoo. Hotmail is a clear
favourite with our university students and I have also used Excite from time
to time. Yahoo's web interface is very dated in its design. Compare it
with the user-friendly folders in Hotmail and the mail interface for Excite
( not their front page which is in need of a makeover)
As a SEARCH ENGINE Yahoo is still of value, but even in this operation I
would suggest that its competetion ( Google for instance) is making huge
inroads into its market - this in turn impacts upon Yahoo's advertising
reach.
I note that the Australian/NZ version of Yahoo Mail is ranked 5th, well
behind the MSN ( i.e. Microsoft, Channel 9, hotmail etc.) site
best wishes to all
Roger
