I sat here for a bit and debated whether to ignore,
respond, or apologize. I think it's sort of a damned
if I do, damned if I don't kind of thing.
So, I'm apologizing. It's not my intention to be a
list hog or boorish.
Yesterday was a fortuitous day for the museum field in
the US as far as I could tell. It seemed to me that
the NY Times (as well as some of the other periodicals
I also read) took an interest in the museums field, so
much so that they actually published a plethora of
articles.
Because there were so many, I chose to post them only
in abstract if that were an option instead of full
text. Not all papers allow for that choice. The
options were to pick an article and post it, pick no
articles and ignore them, or pick more than one and
post those. Then the problem is, which one was
unworthy to the multifaceted representatives of this
group? Heretofore, they have often precipitated some
fairly decent dialogue. In addition, I was highly
cognizant of the fact that it was Friday, and postings
are usually down on that weekday such that they
shouldn't have proved an abnormal burden.
When I have been thanked in the past for my
contributions, I have tried to privately thank those
who have had kind words. But from those postings, I
was convinced there was some merit to what was being
offered.
What I have observed and/or felt is that there was a
genuine frustration among those wanting to enter the
museums field in garnering entry into career path.
That was clearly evident when we turned the events of
September 11 into constructive dialogue. I have
noticed that, since I have been posting jobs I find in
my daily searches--some of which are ONLY set up to
help others here and not me (except I will acquiesce
that it makes me feel good to help others I may never
know)--there appear to hve been substantively more job
postings AND as a consequence, far fewer young people
hitting the list saying "I need a job". That thread
seems, for now, to have dissipated.
In posting such information, I take an extensive list
of data and try to pare it to jobs that have
applicability to the field. With respect to the
internships and volunteerism, the group has told
neophytes time and again that they should intern or
volunteer so they might have an easier entry into a
museum job. I try to select those I believe may have
transferability.
As regards the reference materials and events
contained in the Opportunities postings, it's my
perception that, beyond being professionals in
whatever regard, we are still people first with a
plethora of needs and exposures. I do try to be
selective and yet broad minded. I don't know that
what I'm posting will help ANYONE. My hope is that it
helps SOMEONE.
The funding sources I have provided, again, are simply
a gift. I have, as a part of the regular course of my
day's reading, some information I feel may, by its
very nature, be of value to those of you here. Since
they often come with tight deadlines, the logic I use
says it's better to get them to you as soon as they
become available because, to delay, you might lose the
lead time you need.
I recognize this may sound defensive, but it seems to
me there have been quite a few threads of late that
should be of hope to those who already subscribe to
the Times and who are looking for a job. Today, I
recall the topics of wrinkled photographs, where to
get banners, whether Filemaker Pro or Access make good
database tools, and how to and whether one should try
to take the cigarette fumes from donated funeral. I'm
sure there were others; these were simply those I
recall off the top of my head.
As for the coffee, heck, I don't drink it myself. A
good cup of tea now and again, and right this minute,
a Diet Coke with a shot bottle of Crown Royal seem to
be doing the trick (this from an erstwhile
nondrinker).
This is the second time in four years that one has
complained about the number of times my name has gone
across their screen.
First, Indigo Nights isn't my real name. My name is
Ms. Gayle M. Montgomery. I am 49 years old and live
in Monrovia, California. I worked my whole life in
the for-profit world except when I have held two jobs
and also worked in the nonprofit arena. I have been
unemployed (largely by choice) since October 19 and am
just now (about) ready to hunker down and become
reemployed. By mid-October, I had made $55,000 last
year alone and just wanted a bit of a rest before I
went back to cracking rocks again. On top of that,
I've been fighting an upper respiratory infection for
the last five and a half weeks.
I found a quality museum-based position that struck my
fancy two days ago to which I may well apply. (And, by
the way, Mr. C, I hope that satisfies your lament of
some time back, as though not knowing my name would
cause to discredit the caliber of what I offer the
group. Do you really, after all, know if John
Chadwick is John Chadwick and not Bob Smith, and do we
really know that you're Mr. C?)
So, it really doesn't do me a lot of good to get
Indigo's name out there. It's not done to give Indigo
anything in return except the satisfaction of perhaps
being able to give back to this WONDERFUL list that
provides so much quality information. I thought,
perhaps, in some way, I was meeting a need.
I know what it's like to work full time and have to
serve many masters. I've done that my whole life, and
even worked two jobs when I felt there was too much
time on my hands so that I might keep one foot on both
sides of the profit arena (both for and non) preparing
to transition to where I am now. For me, it's that
old adage that you MAKE the time for those things that
are important, and I find THIS list to be so.
I'm sorry if what I have provided has offended any of
you. If you can tell me what it is that you
personally find offensive so that I might not include
such information in the future, do let me know.
But objecting to just seeing my name rings rather
hollow with me.
Again, I apologize if I have offended (MOST of) you.
