For research (including locating indigenous art museums), I have just
finished reading, and can recommend heartily:

_Art Information and the Internet. How to Find It, How to Use It_
Chicago/London: Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers, 1999.

The book offers information for the art historian/student, museum curator,
and art collector: It is appropriate for first-timers to the internet, yet
the careful explanations didn't seem to weigh heavily on me, a more
experienced internet user (in fact, some niggling questions, such as "What
does MARC stand for?" were answered). It also is packed with indications to
various sources, especially American and Canadian ones. UK sources and
French sources get some "air time," a few sources in Germany are mentioned,
a few in Italy (typically on Florence and Rome, sigh), even fewer in other
countries. Some of the sources are "tried and true," and available on the
internet in one form, or another, or they still are not available on the
internet which also is helpful to know. It does seem to be a bit lacking in
sources for museology, although ICOM and a few others (such as AAM, AASLH,
CHIN) do get quick mention; it doesn't have references to sources for
university museological programs, for instance. One very nice thing about
the new internet book, there is a web site which I haven't used yet, but
which they say they will keep posted with updates, including those which
helpful readers provide.

References sometimes are made to her previous, and equally helpful volume
which seems to explain some of the "tried and true" sources better, so
should not be overlooked:
