The procedure for Work Permits in the UK is such that your prospective employer has to apply for the work permit on your behalf, they have to demonstrate that there are no acceptable candidates who already have the right to work in the UK. This means that not only do you have to be the best person for the job but in addition none of the other candidates were acceptable. This makes it very difficult in the curatorial field were there are normally lots of UK applicants for every job. If the job asks for a particular specialism or skill then your chances may be higher.
Of course you should remember that, generally, if you have the right to work in any Eurpoean Union country without a work permit then you can work in the UK, they all have different nationallity rules but if you or any of your parents or grand parents were born in an EU country it might be worth checking with the appropriate Embassy.

I finished my MA in Gallery Studies at Essex University in 2000. Before I
rushed home I was looking for jobs and internships in the UK. A few implied
that they would help me secure a visa (as my student visa was due to
expire). The matter became moot when I had to move back home. This leaves
me in the US looking for a job with a foreign MA. I can't say that it has
been any more difficult (its hard to begin with). I do have to explain what
"awarded with distinction" truly means, and it has been a bit slippery
applying for Grad Internships (transcript wise). As for working legally in
the UK, you can also marry a Brit. I managed to pick up an MA and a husband
that year!
