Skokie blocks relocation of Holocaust museum
--------------------
January 23, 2002
The Skokie Village Board denied a request Tuesday to relocate the Holocaust Memorial Museum to a residential neighborhood.
By a 4-3 vote, board members denied a special permit to the Holocaust Memorial Foundation, which wanted to move because it had outgrown its downtown space at 4255 Main St.
Opponents on the board said the museum would bring too much traffic to a residential area. Museum officials wanted to build a new facility on a 3-acre site behind the Seymour J. Abrams Cheder Lubavitch Hebrew Day School at 7520 Laramie Ave.
"I still feel it just doesn't belong there," Trustee Frank McCabe said to the crowd of about 200 in the Skokie Public Library.
After neighbors complained about the project, officials modified the plan so that all vehicle access to the museum would come from a widened Howard Street, a busy roadway at the school's driveway.
Museum officials, who have made an effort to stay in Skokie, said they looked at other sites but found few that were affordable or had adequate space.
Chicago architect Stanley Tigerman designed the proposed $15 million building.
