Web server statistics provide data which are both abundant and rather slim,
depending on what sort of information you want. They can tell you how many
visitors your site draws, what pages they view, what sites and search
engines are sending them to your site, and the like. We've been using
Summary.net (http://www.summary.net) for log analysis--it creates a
fascinating duration chart showing how long people spend at your site--great
for evaluating the site's holding power.

Going beyond site stats, you can add a pop-up exit survey to your site, to
gather more qualitative information from individual visitors. We've recently
done this on half a dozen of our sites for a research and evaluation
project--while you don't get the depth of information that face-to-face
evaluation can provide, you do get a lot of really interesting and helpful
responses. It takes a bit of time to set up properly, but then it's all
automatic and the responses just flow in. I can give you more details if
