Considering this is a rural area, the salary is not really that bad. Small historical societies often employ only one "part-time" person at a similar salary, and that person tends to work closer to 40 hours a week. I know people with Master's Degrees who take similar jobs for similar salaries. The world of the small historical society museum is very different from the world of the medium-sized museum with a 15-20 person staff. There are many historical society museums out there with an all-volunteer staff.
I'd be curious to know what this museum's operating budget is. I'm willing to bet that at least half, if not more, of their budget is going to paying this position. Sure, it would be wonderful if small museums could afford to pay their staff handsomely for their hard work and long hours. But first, visitors, community members, and governments need to support the small museums so that they have the operating budget to do that.
