I know it sucks for the employer but personally, if I was in a 6 month position
and had a full-time offer a month or so down the road, I'd take the full-time
job. Make sure your contract allows you to get out tho' as you might be locked
in for the entire duration. Given the transient nature of the museum business,
a permanent position at a liveable wage is gold.
Try not to burn any bridges if you quit tho' and make sure people are
understanding. And even with 6-month positions, you pretty much have to keep
looking for jobs since it might take that long to find another one in the
museum business. I would try to stay in the position as long as possible and
won't mention that I was still looking when I took the job but you do need to
keep your options open.
If you get offered a temporary position and are still waiting to hear from a
permanent one, be up front about it when you hear the job offer. Most places
will let you wait up to a week if you have other interviews yet to go, esp. in
the museum business. If a place isn't understanding about waiting or letting
you go for a permanent position, they probably are a bit hairy to work for in
the first place.
