Something I've found useful in encouraging visitors to tell others (funders,
etc.) about the museum is to have postcards with the message you want them
to disseminate already printed on the left hand side of the card with
enough room for them to write something additional in on the left hand side,
under your pre printed blurb. The right hand side could already be
pre-addressed -- since that way visitors can just put a stamp on and drop in
the mail. Of course, on the front of the postcard is a picture of something
relevant to the issue on the card...

Subject: Visitor Comments and Government Support
> Hello to everyone on the List! An interesting question has recently come
up in discussions between the Board of Directors and myself regarding
visitor comments. I work in a small museum that is very dependant on local
government support. Visitors sometimes write comments in the visitor book,
but these tend to be very general, like "nice display!" It is always nice
to read these types of comments, but the more detailed comments come from
talking directly with patrons. The question is, how can I encourage these
patrons to tell local government about their enjoyment of the museum? It
seems like just saying, "please write your councilperson and the mayor to
tell them how you feel" is not working. Any ideas about how to spread the
word? This positive press is vital to the museum's support. Any comments
or suggestions will be most appreciated.
