Me.
I was a groupie at the campus Vertebrate Museum while in grad school. When
they needed to replace someone, I was asked because I was known. I was
working there when the opportunity came to work where I am now (on a grant),
and my experience and references from there are what got me here. I've
since advanced to my present permanent position.

"Show of hands... how many of
you got a job through volunteer work?"
- 8 years of free labor and never got hired and I wouldn't be employed now
except for connections made through my graduate advisor. It isn't
volunteering, or experience, it is who you know.
