If the person has an incredible amount of luck, the volunteers who have been
running the museum will stay engaged, relinquish day-to-day operational
control and willingly and cheerfully take direction from their new employee.
Or they will do this for at least two or three years.
Frankly, not so long ago, I started out at less. There was no pretense of
part-time work and I put in many 80 hour weeks. I know at least one
energetic young director presently working full-time (and overtime) with few
if any benefits for a similar wage to that advertised.
Of course we would all like it if our work, which does have other rewards,
had more financial rewards. Until there are more paying positions than there
are job-seekers, I don't see this happening on any large scale. A bit
earlier Chris Dill offered some interesting ideas on rectifying this
situation. I remember no subsequent posts in support of Chris' ideas.
