It would seem to me that the contents of a liquor bottle, being mass produced, might not be as important for every museum to maintain. I do understand the concept of keeping a sample for research purposes, but I have also arranged to un-load cannonballs and other ordinance because storing the charge in the museum's collections or exhibits didn't seem smart.
Lori, we did an exhibit on the history of brewing at the State Historical Society of North Dakota some years back (when I was there). It focused on the brewing industry before ND came into the state dry in 1889. It was, as I recall, illegal to commercially brew beer there until 1965 or so. The exhibit did not promote drinking or brands, and was very popular at the main museum (ND Heritage Center). The then board president lived in Pembina, a town of ca 500 a stone's throw from Canada and Minnesota, and was virulently anti-alcohol. When she heard we were planning to transfer the brewing exhibit to "her" museum - our newest branch - she squashed it. I thought management's decision to require that we mount another exhibit at the last minute was gutless, and said so as we created another exhibit to fill the space with no time and no budget.
But I'm more mellow now :)))
