Rick,
I agree wholeheartedly with everyone who mentioned internships and
volunteering -- that is key to breaking into the field. A good academic
program is important also. One set of skills I truly wish I had as a
curator in a small museum are in exhibit fabrication -- matting and framing,
for example, or being able to wield a hammer without hurting myself. Good
carpentry skills go a long way! I think an entry level collections person
who can claim these abilities will have many opportunities.
