David -
The conservation field is extremely competitive. While in the past
conservators trained on the job (apprentice training), today's up and coming
conservators do basically a triple undergraduate major in chemistry, studio
art, and art history. After that, the best Masters programs recommend
working in a conservation lab for a few years after which you go through
stiff competition to enter a recognized Masters program for 2 years of study
and a 3rd year internship. These programs include Buffalo (formerly
Cooperstown), Winterthur, and NYU. There are also some abroad. I would
contact conservators at local museums to talk to them about their training
experience - you may find it helpful. Good luck!

Just a quick question: If I am looking for a job in Conservation and
restoration, do I need a masters degree, or would a BA be fine? I
appreciate your help!
