Carol Kleiman, career advice columnist for the Chicago Tribune, says you
should NEVER divulge current salary information, even when requested. First
of all, your current salary has relatively little bearing on what you are
worth to the potential new employer. Second, the employer holds almost all
the cards -- they know how much they can afford to pay. (If you give a
figure that's too high, they may think they can't afford you. If you give a
number too low, they may think you are not qualified enough. And if you
give a number that's just right, you may lose the leverage to negotiate a
better salary.) Finally, the time for salary negotiations is AFTER an offer
has been made, not at the beginning when they are looking for ways to weed
out candidates.
Ms. Kleiman even goes so far as to say that if a company insists on
receiving this information, you may want to re-think whether you want to
work for them. I would agree.
