Our board has terms of office - terms are 3 years and members can serve two
terms in a row before they need to take a break. Membership on our board is
drawn from sub-sommittees, and from volunteers and also from people in the
community who are new to the organization but have board experience
elsewhere.
A word on exceptions: an exception that can keep valuable board members on
for longer than the accepted term can also keep controlling or otherwise
destructive members on the board for a longer term! Beware the exception!
Valuable board members can always remain on committees.
Regular change is always healthy on a board. An organization should be
bigger than the sum of its part, and able to continue smooth functioning
with new board members.
