This type of situation is one of the best reasons to have a clear policy manual and collections policy which cover
deaccessions. If you have a policy, cite it (and let it be known that the policy is approved by the higher-ups). Without a
written document, you get to make a new decision for every case, and the politics can get ugly. I would advise standing
your ground, but realize that you may have to give in later. Be sure to get a policy in place before the next request, as it
will save you lots of headaches later.
