Hello listers! Need some advice on what a BFA in
graphic design will get ya in the museum world.
I recently purchased an iBook and loaded it up with
software, including Adobe products. Slowly, I am
teaching myself how to use Illustrator and have
rediscovered my passion for being visually creative.
(In college I decided to major in art history rather
than fine arts cuz I thought I would have a better
chance at a professional career, jokes on me.) So far,
I have just completed small jobs for my museum:
newspaper ads, flyers, posters, direct mail pieces,
etc.
So now I am thinking, maybe I should go back to school
part-time to get a BFA in graphic design. Currently,
I am head of a marketing dept. for a small art museum
(i.e. I'm a one-person show), and I have my MPA. I
am
still building up my years of experience. It is my
goal to continue to advance up in management. What I
would to know from
knowledgeable listers: What type of careers would open
up to me with a graphic design degree and a portfolio?
Do I need a BFA or would the practiced knowledge be
enough? I could always attend a tech school *gasp*
to pick up the trade. Please keep in mind, I am not
interested in entry level professions, strictly mid to
upper level management. And, one more question, how
competitive are these positions?
Thanks and take it easy!
Amy Kleinert
