For a good discussion on this topic, see Mike Wallace's (no, not
THAT Mike Wallace) Mickey Mouse History and Other Essays on American
Memory (Philadelphia: Temple University Press), 1996. If you're looking
for specific information, try some of the living history publications out
there. I know Michelle Evans of Conner Prairie wrote an interesting piece
on the funeral program at their site in one of the MOMCC magazines. I'll
have to check for the specific issue number and date, unless someone out
there has it handy. Also check out CRM No. 9, 1998 for Karen Byrne's
article "Ethnic History Exhibits and Public Controversy."
