Michael
I am currently researching this topic, but more specifically the collection
of contemporary industrial/product design objects by museums. Off the top of
my head, I can recommend the following publications;
Pearce, Susan Collecting in Contemporary Practice Sage Publications
Pearce, Susan On Collecting Routledge
Carey, Frances(ed) Collecting the Twentieth Century BM press
Knell, Simon (ed) Museums and the Future of Collecting Sage Publications
SAMDOK Bulletin, Swedish Contemporary collecting/documentation initiative-
information regarding this can be accessed via the web
http://www.nordm.se/nm/samdok/samdok_e.html
and there is an excellent bibliography for this subject to be found at;
http://www.xs4all.nl/~rwa/contemp.htm
All these publications offer opinions and ideas that surround the subject in
both theory and practice, and so are valuable in considering developing
guidelines.

Subject: collecting contemporary artifacts
Dear Listers--
I am posting this question for a colleague, who is preparing a talk
to
give at the end of the month. Can anyone suggest a publication giving
written guidelines for collecting contemporary (that is, present-day)
artifacts in history museums ? I didn't know of such a source off the top
of my head, but told him I would consult the collective brainpower of the
list.
Please respond to me off list if you have suggestions. The email
address
is [log in to unmask] Thanks for you help.
