I saw a natural history museum display (I think, it could have been a tv
nature program) about a disorder that can cause a bony growth to form on a
rabbit's head. The skull of an afflicted rabbit was displayed, with
photographs of live rabbits with the growths. The notes speculated that
such a growth could honestly have been mistaken for a antelope-like horn,
hence the eventual jackalope myth!
