Calling all museum professionals interested in leadership skills and
diversity in the field!
If you plan to attend Many Voices, the 2001 Joint Conference of the
Mountain Plains Museums Association and the Oklahoma Museums Association
next month in Tulsa, Oklahoma, make time for a special pre-conference
workshop. On Tuesday, October 2, the American Association of Museums and
Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, will offer “Leadership
through Diversity.”
The workshop uses the diversity definition from the National Partnership
for Reinventing Government stating, “Diversity includes all characteristics
and experiences that define each of us as individuals.” Workshop
participants will
 define the concept of leadership,
 set goals to achieve more diversity in museum leadership,
 develop leadership strategies, and
 strategize concrete action steps.
Participants will receive a diversity toolkit with information they are
encouraged to share with their organizations and museum colleagues. The
toolkit contains
 diversity exercises,
 training techniques, and
 resource information about diversity and inclusion in museums.
This highly interactive workshop has been developed in collaboration with
the AAM Diversity Coalition.
Registration is $40 and includes continental breakfast and lunch; pre-
registration is required. If you plan to stay over, the special conference
rate at the Doubletree Downtown Hotel expires September 10. See
http://www.frontier.net/~mpma/confschedule.pdf for registration.
