Your best bet may be what is known as a "digital message repeater unit."  This is a more sophisticated version of the same chip-based technology that is used to "play" a snippet of "Happy Birthday" when you open up a birthday card.  The device has no moving parts, is completely enclosed, and is about the size of a hardback book.  It can be mounted virtually anywhere, so long as you prvode access to an external power supply and an amplifier.  Audio quality ranges from what you hear when you're talking on a telephone, to comparable to high-fidelity or even CD sound.

There are a number of systems on the market--Dorfman in Baltimore is one vendor with which I'm familiar, but there are several others as well.
