Kathy Jones-Garmil,
There are five to six thousand photographs by Seneca Ray
Stoddard (1844-1917) at the Adirondack Museum in Blue
Mountain Lake, NY.
In 1982, Bill Crowley (now director of the State Historical
Museum in Madison, WI) wrote an exhibit catalog entitled
"Seneca Ray Stoddard: Adirondack Illustrator." It was
published by the Adirondack Museum and has a good selection
of photographs. Bill is on vacation for a few weeks, but
would probably be happy to answer questions about Stoddard
when he returns - when Bill returns. Stoddard won't be
coming back.
Stoddard published a number of books, most notably "Old Times
in the Adirondacks; the Narrative of a Trip Into the
Wilderness in 1873." It was reprinted in 1971 by Adirondack
Yesteryears in Saranac Lake, NY.
Maitland De Sormo wrote a monograph entitled "Seneca Ray
Stoddard; Versatile Camera-Artist" which was published by
Adirondack Yesteryears in 1972.
