Internship Announcement
Capulin Volcano National Monument, a unit of the National Park Service, has
one collection management internship available for Summer 2001.
Stipend: $50 per week plus housing
Period of Internship: One 6-month or one 6-week internship is available.
Exact start and end dates are negotiable.
Description of Museum: Capulin Volcano National Monument was established in
1916 to preserve Capulin Volcano, a nearly perfectly-shaped cinder cone.
The cone stands more than 1200 feet above the surrounding High Plains of
northeastern New Mexico. The volcano is long extinct, and today the
forested slopes provide habitat for mule deer, wild turkey, black bear and
other wildlife. A 2-mile paved road spiraling to the volcano rim makes
Capulin Volcano one of the most accessible volcanoes in the world. Trails
leading around the rim and to the bottom of the crater allow a rare
opportunity to easily explore a volcano.
The Park’s small museum collection consists of both cultural and natural
history collections. The natural history collection includes a herbarium as
well as geology, entomology and other biological specimens. A small
collection of 28 archaeological artifacts and a growing archive comprise
the cultural collection. Archival materials include a historic photograph
collection, associated field records and Park administrative history
documents. Much of the natural history collection and most of the archives
remain uncataloged.
