A salary range listing on a job announcement isn't so that people can see how rich they can get; it's for people to determine if they can live off the salary posted in the area the job is. Applying for a job and then finding out that it doesn't pay a living wage for you is just a waste of your time and your potential employer's time. I've interviewed for jobs in major cities and found out afterwards that the salaries are "in the low-20s." With student loan debt, that salary is way below what I'm willing to live on in a major city where a decent living wage is more around low-30s. My time and the hiring body's time could have been saved by providing a salary range up front.
