Dear Mary,
If you think you've got some rare books, I'd approach a college or
university library.  If you think they will already have the books you own
(and if they are standard texts they probably do), I would call a high
school or middle school librarian.   They would love such a donation and it
should be tax deductible.
You might also look to see if there is a second-hand book seller in your
area.  Even though a second-hand book seller is a commercial enterprise,
they actually provide a great service.  I buy many needed, out-of-print
books from independent booksellers.  They need support and are fading fast
in light of the big giants.

Hello Folks, I need some advice.  I am planning to move to a smaller house
and will need to get rid of many of my books, most of which are art-related.
  I have exhibition catalogues, artists monographs, art monthly
publications, art history (mostly medieval and renaissance, some out of
print)and so on...  I have NO idea what to do with them.  I'd rather donate
than sell them. None of them appear collectible or rare (but I'm not in the
book business so I don't know for sure). So if you have any ideas, I would
appreciate hearing from you -- off list is fine--I am open to all
suggestions.  Thanks!
