As an archivist, I second the suggestion of the photo sleeves from Gaylord.
Certain plastics are neutral, and that is what Gaylord sells in their
archival catalog. I've been wondering about those hard plastic sleeves the
postcard sellers use to mail their items. One I received recently (I
collect local postcards as a hobby, too) was cracked. Had there been a
postcard in there, it would have ripped, definitely not a sign of a
high-quality archival plastic. The best policy is to assume they are bad
unless you know what they are made of.

One thing these sleeves won't do is preserve photographic color. My memory
is that postcards are often screened images, printed like those in books,
rather than true photographs, so perhaps the color will be more stable. You
may want to check some experts as to what postcards would be prone to fading
if framed.

| Subject: preserving old postcards
|
| This might be a little off topic for this list, but I know many of you
| are familiar with historic preservation, so here goes.
|
| I have recently started collecting postcards of my town. Now I have
| about 50 postcards and I am wondering what the best way is to store
| them. I would like to frame some of them, but obviously can't do it
| with all of them. I really love the hard plastic sleeves that some of
| them came in, but I just read that over time the plastic can damage the
| postcard.
|
| Since I am not a diehard postcard collector, I thought maybe one of you
| out there might have some suggestions. I'm assuming some sort of acid
| free paper in an album would be the best (??). I'm sure that there is a
| product out there for this purpose, but I'm not sure where to look.
